Q: What is the deascéal Film Scheme?
A: deascéal is a regional short film initiative supporting the development and production of high-quality live-action narrative short films in Cork, Kerry, and Waterford. The scheme aims to develop local talent and strengthen regional screen ecosystems.

Q: Who funds the scheme?
A: The scheme is funded collaboratively by Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Kerry County Council, Waterford City & County Council, and RTÉ. Screen Cork administers the scheme, in partnership with Screen Kerry and Screen Waterford.

Q: Who can apply?
A: Applicants must:

  • Be 18 or older

  • Have resided in Cork, Kerry, or Waterford for at least 12 months, or have a demonstrable connection to the region

  • Hold all rights to the submitted script

  • Not be enrolled full-time in a film/TV production course during production

Q: Do I need a director and producer attached before I apply?
A: No, however a director and producer must be in place before the final pitch if your script is selected for Stage 2.

Q: Can international filmmakers apply?
A: No. The scheme is for applicants with strong regional connections to the participating counties.

Q: Can I submit more than one project?
A: Yes, multiple submissions are allowed, provided each project meets eligibility criteria and is submitted separately.

Q: Can scripts be in Irish or English?
A: Yes. If submitting an Irish-language project, please provide an English translation.

Q: How much funding is available per film?
A: Each selected film receives a non-recoupable production grant of €14,000.

Q: How do I submit my project?
A: You must apply via the Apply page on this website

Q: Do I have to submit supporting documents?
A: Supporting documents such as a Look-book, writers’ statements and an indicative creative team (director, producer) are not required, but are accepted and encouraged.

Q: What is the selection process?
A: There are two stages:

  1. Stage 1 – Script Assessment: Independent readers review submissions, scoring on artistic merit, creative vision, production feasibility, and regional relevance. The top 3 in each region are selected for development

    Writers will then engage in script development sessions with a professional script mentor.

  2. Stage 2 – Live Pitch & Final Selection: Shortlisted teams pitch to a panel of industry experts. Four final projects are selected (one per local authority).

Q: Can I resubmit a project if it isn’t selected?
A: Yes, for future rounds, provided eligibility criteria are met.

Q: Who owns the copyright of the completed films?
A: Copyright remains with the filmmakers. Screen Cork and funders have a non-exclusive right to use films and promotional material for scheme marketing, education, and advocacy.

Q: Where can I get help preparing my pitch?
A: All shortlisted projects receive pitch coaching before Stage 2 live presentation.

Q: What happens after my film is completed?
A: Screen Cork supports festival planning, regional showcases, and promotional activity. The scheme aims to provide career development and exposure for all filmmakers involved.

Q: Can the same team apply in multiple years?
A: Yes, subject to eligibility and separate application rounds.
